About the Burton-upon-Trent & Staffordshire areas/regions of the UK
‘Burton upon Trent is a prosperous market town, famous for it’s breweries’ is how the original VTS handbook started. This is still a market town famous for its breweries but many changes have taken place and the industry is far from being the secure job it used to be. New initiatives, such as the Centrum 100 Business Park and EEC funding are contributing to Burton’s continuing prosperity. The development of other industries such as Toyota has improved the prospect for the people of Burton.
The town is predominately Victorian, with some fine buildings as well as rows of terraced houses. However it boasts extensive shopping facilities, sports centres, the world famous Bass Museum, as well as the attractive Washlands (the flood plain of the Trent as it passes throughout the town -recently repaired flood defences were put to the test this winter!). There is much new development on the outskirts of the town which has a population of about 60,000.
Beyond the town there is ample opportunity for leisure, the cities of Lichfield and Derby less than thirty minutes away, with Nottingham, Leicester, Birmingham and Stoke being within one hours drive. Stratford upon Avon can be comfortably reached for an evening performance (if you finish work promptly!). Rail links to London can be made from Burton and Lichfield - only 75 minutes from the latter. The East Midlands and Birmingham Airports are very close and offer a wide range of international destinations.
If you wish to explore the country then the Welsh Borders are about an hours drive and the Peak District well within the hour. You don’t need to travel far for the countryside – Burton is pretty well the centre of the new National Forest! The excellent road links - A38, M6, M1 & M40, makes travel to just about any area easy.

"Say, for what were hop-yards meant,
Or why was Burton built on Trent?
Oh many a peer of England brews
Livelier liquor than the Muse,
And malt does more than Milton can
To justify God's ways to man"
- The Welsh Marches
